The New York Times launched a new mobile application Friday that enables iPad users to view an enhanced digital edition of the newspaper for free until early next year. Available for download at Apple’s App Store, the NYTimes app for iPad will give tablet users access to more than 25 sections of Times content, including more videos, photos and breaking news alerts.
“With the NYTimes app, our readers can immerse themselves in our award-winning journalism and rich multimedia, all tailored for a premier experience on the iPad,” said New York Times Media Group Senior Vice President Yasmin Namini.
Enhanced Capabilities
With the NYTimes app for iPad, the navigation bar that appears at the bottom of article pages gives users the ability to swipe through and select other articles within the same newspaper section. Also on tap is a popover listing for smoother navigation between sections.
What’s more, articles now feature embedded photos as well as videos that the user can either play while remaining within the article or expand to full-screen view. Additionally, the digital newspaper’s large-scale images, which are tailored for the iPad screen, can be viewed as full-page slideshows.
Other digital design improvements include the display of breaking news notifications — even when the app is closed. Additionally, users will be able to share articles, videos and multimedia via Facebook, Twitter and e-mail.
Executives said the newspaper remains committed to setting new standards for online advertising, with the iPad a prime example of its ability to innovate. The goal is to create ads “that make the most of the iPad’s rich media capabilities to create a compelling experience for the intelligent, thoughtful readers who choose to engage with the Times by downloading and launching the app,” said Senior Vice President Denise Warren at The New York Times Media Group.
A Hard Sell
Still, not all…
