A recent study published in the journal Nature has proposed that a period of extreme cold and dryness, often referred to as a “big freeze,” was a driving force behind the migration of early humans out of Europe approximately 45,000 years ago. This research, led by scientists from the University of Cambridge, delved into climate data obtained from ice cores extracted in Greenland and Antarctica to shed light on this historical phenomenon.
The ice cores revealed a significant climatic shift in Europe, marked by a notable drop in temperature and moisture levels occurring between 45,000 and 43,000 years ago. This timeframe coincided with a glacial period in Earth’s history, characterized by expansive ice sheets covering substantial portions of Europe, far more extensive than their current extents.
Additionally, the study uncovered evidence of decreased sunlight reaching Europe during this period. This reduction in sunlight would have posed challenges for plant growth, resulting in a scarcity of food resources for early human populations.
The confluence of these adverse factors—colder temperatures, arid conditions, and reduced sunlight—created a harsh environment that made it increasingly challenging for early humans to subsist in Europe. Consequently, many of them embarked on migratory journeys to seek refuge in more temperate regions, such as Africa and Asia.
The findings of this study align with other pieces of evidence indicating the departure of early humans from Europe during this era. Archaeological sites from this particular time period are notably more prevalent in Africa and Asia than they are in Europe.
Moreover, these findings hold significance for our comprehension of human evolution. The enforced migration of early humans from Europe potentially played a role in disseminating their genetic diversity to other parts of the world. This, in turn, might have contributed to the rich genetic tapestry of modern humans.
