When moving to Windows 7, you have a decision to make: should you install the 32-bit or the 64-bit version? Many PC users have no idea how to answer that question. For the near future, the decision to go with the traditional 32-bit system is a safe one, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for you.
The 64-bit version of Windows can theoretically handle twice as many processing chores at once.
That said, this edition only makes sense for users with high powered computers featuring at least four gigabytes of RAM and who work frequently with applications that require the higher 64-bit performance, such as those who stress their machines out with photo and video editing software.
In deciding to go 64-bit, three key factors should be taken into account.
First, the processor must be compatible with 64-bit code, which is the case with the current generation of chips. For older processors, it’s possible to use software tools to check whether the processor is compatible. A variety can be found on the Internet for free.
Second, 64-bit drivers must be available for all of your PC’s internal components, including the graphics card and attached devices.
The 64-bit version of Windows 7 includes those drivers for the majority of current hardware peripherals. For older or more exotic devices, it’s a good idea to check the manufacturer’s Web sites to see if 64-bit drivers are available.
And finally, find out whether the 64-bit architecture is supported by the software you use. The number of applications compatible with 64-bit processing remains small. Even so, all 32-bit programs will run on 64-bit Windows.
