Scientist have discovered evidence that black holes could be surrounded by large amounts of dark matter. Dark matter is a mysterious substance that makes up approximately 85% of the matter in the universe. Although it cannot be detected through ordinary measures, its existence is inferred from its gravitational effects.
The study, which was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, studied the orbits of stars surrounding two supermassive black holes. The team discovered that the stars were moving much faster than expected based solely on the black holes mass. There could be a substantial amount of dark matter surrounding the black holes, providing the additional gravitational force necessary to keep the stars in orbit.
This discovery represents the first direct detection of dark matter around a black hole. The results could contribute significantly to our understanding of dark matter and its role in the universe.
More research is required to confirm the findings as there could be an alternative explanation for the fast-moving stars, such as the presence of another black hole that has not yet been discovered.
