A new skin patch, known as Viaskin Peanut, has emerged as a promising treatment for toddlers with peanut allergies. Developed by DBV Technologies, this patch has recently received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The effectiveness of the Viaskin Peanut patch was evaluated in a study involving 362 toddlers, aged 1 to 3 years, who had peanut allergies. The children were divided into two groups randomly: one received the Viaskin Peanut patch, while the other received a placebo patch. The patches were worn for 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, over a span of 4 weeks.
Results published in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated that the children who received the Viaskin Peanut patch exhibited increased tolerance to peanut protein compared to those who received the placebo patch. The children in the Viaskin Peanut group could consume the equivalent of 1 to 4 peanuts, while the placebo group could only ingest a small amount of peanut protein without experiencing an allergic reaction.
The Viaskin Peanut patch has proven to be a safe and effective treatment option for toddlers with peanut allergies. It offers a convenient application method without the need for needles or injections. Additionally, it is relatively affordable, costing approximately $1,000 for a year’s supply.
Although the Viaskin Peanut patch does not provide a cure for peanut allergies, it can significantly reduce the risk of allergic reactions and enhance the overall quality of life for children affected by this condition.
