Former Department of Homeland Security cyber chief Rod A. Beckstrom has been tapped to be the new president of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the California based non-profit, which oversees the Internet’s address system. Most recently, Beckstrom was director of the National Cyber Security Center — an organization created to coordinate security efforts across the intelligence community. Beckstrom resigned that post in March, citing a lack of funding and authority. Beckstrom joins ICANN as the Internet governance body faces some of the most complex and contentious proposed changes to the Internet’s addressing system in the organization’s entire 11-year history.
