Being able to distinguish between the 1% of prostate cancer patients who will develop lethal disease and the majority of patients who will develop non-lethal cancer is a key goal in prostate cancer research. Scientists have gotten closer to this goal by identifying a new prostate tumor suppressor gene called PHLPP1 and showing that it acts in concert with PTEN, a tumor suppressor that is mutated in roughly half of prostate cancer patients.
