In 2021, the UK government announced its intention to prohibit the sale of plastic wet wipes in England from 2024 as part of its wider efforts to combat plastic pollution.
These wipes are often flushed down toilets and pose a significant environmental hazard, clogging sewers, and causing flooding. They also harm marine life when they end up in rivers and oceans.
According to the government, 93% of sewer blockages in England are caused by plastic wet wipes, costing water companies £100 million annually to address.
The ban on plastic wet wipes is a key part of the government’s 25-year environment plan, which aims to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste by 2042, including single-use plastics like straws and bags.
Some people argue that banning a commonly used product is unfair and there are alternative solutions, the government considers the prohibition necessary for environmental protection. Although the method of enforcement for the ban is not yet clear, it is expected to take effect in 2024.
