Muirhead Aerospace

Muirhead Aerospace is a world leader in the production and manufacture of motion technology. We specialise in products for the aviation, defence, aerospace and industrial market sectors. Our product range includes the design, manufacture and testing of electro-mechanical actuators: linear and rotary; electronics drive; and signal conditioning.

MOTION TECHNOLOGY COMPONENTS

We also supply components, including AC motors, AC tachometer generators, DC motors, DC torque motors, Limited Angle Torque Motors (LATMs), stepper motors, DC tachometer generators, Permanent Magnet Alternators (PMAs), gear heads, optical encoders, synchros, resolvers, linvars, pickoffs and RVDTs.

To ensure customer satisfaction, we address quality throughout the company. Every Muirhead product has been designed, engineered and manufactured by in-house teams.

The products undergo rigorous testing and can withstand harsh environmental conditions, including fuel and hydraulic fluid immersion, temperature extremes and high vibration.

Whatever your requirement, actuation, position control or sensor, Muirhead can offer an innovative solution.

ELECTRO-MECHANICAL COMPONENTS

We manufacture a number of state-of-the-art electromechanical components engineered for precise motion-control, high reliability in flight and mission-critical applications.

AC AND DC MOTORS

Muirhead Aerospace provides a range of metric and imperial custom-made AC motors, DC motors, DC brushless motors, DC sensorless motors, high-torque motors, LATMs, stepping motors and variable-reluctance motors.

SYNCHROS, RESOLVERS, RVDTS AND PICKOFFS

Muirhead Aerospace offers a range of Mil-standard synchros, resolvers, RVDTs and pickoffs, which can be customised to your specific requirements.

METRIC AND IMPERIAL ENCODERS

We produce and manufacture a wide range of metric and imperial absolute optical encoders, incremental optical encoders and incremental magnetic encoders.

TACHO GENERATORS AND PERMANENT MAGNET ALTERNATORS

Muirhead specialises in the design and manufacture of AC tacho generators, DC tacho generators and PMAs.

ELECTRO-MECHANICAL ACTUATORS

Actuators are at the forefront of Muirhead’s vision for the future. Investment in a dedicated design centre, engineers with proven track records and recruits from partnerships with universities have seen the team grow into one of the best in Europe.

Electro-mechanical actuators transform electrical energy into mechanical energy in the form of linear or rotational movement. The source of this movement typically comes from a DC brushless motor paired with a resolver and its controller. In the case of a rotary actuator a gearbox, clutch or brake and angular position sensor are also typically present.

For a linear actuator the following components are usually present: DC brushless, resolver, gearbox, ball or roller screw, clutch / brake and position sensor. All the components are integrated in a housed assembly. In all cases an electronic control unit controls the various functions to obtain the required command trajectory.

SEEKER HEAD

Muirhead has over the years supplied many missile programmes with the highest-quality motion products. The key to our success is our ability to package components such as limited angle torque motors, LATMs, resolvers and optical encoders into the space available.

VALVE CONTROL UNIT (VCU)

The VCU is a fuel / air control system for a missile which regulates the air / solid propellant mix during flight. The system consists of a DC brushless motor ball screw and an electronic control interface that provides data transfer with the missile system and control motor commutation. Key design features enable this control unit to provide short-term high performance and operate at very high temperatures, whilst retaining a long shelf-life.

FIN ACTUATION SYSTEM (FAS)

The FAS regulates the requested trajectory during flight. The system consists of a 4DC brushless motor, ball screws and an electronic control interface that provides data transfer with the missile system, control motor commutation and fin position. Key design features enable this control unit to provide short-term high-performance and operate at very high temperatures, whilst retaining a long shelf life.
