Adobe Systems launched a revamped Acrobat platform on Monday along with new cloud-based services featuring enhanced document collaboration and production capabilities that enterprise users can access from virtually anywhere. Called Adobe X, the new platform also lets users produce PDFs that integrate content ranging from paper documents, e-mail, photos, spreadsheets, web-site content, audio files, and even video clips compatible with Adobe Flash Player.
Adobe X is not just another incremental productivity upgrade, company executives said Monday. This time the goal is to address today’s critical challenge of communicating and collaborating with widely dispersed teams of colleagues, partners and customers.
“Our new Acrobat.com services tackle the need to have access to, exchange, retrieve and view documents reliably from anywhere,” said Adobe Vice President Kevin Lynch.

Adobe’s new SendNow document-service, which is fully integrated with the cloud, enables enterprise workers to send, download, track and manage documents from wherever they are, using whatever computing platform is at hand — including mobile devices. And by transferring files directly through SendNow, enterprise workers will be able to avoid the constraints imposed by conventional e-mail gateways and FTP servers.
With SendNow, e-mail is used as a notification mechanism that a file or files have been sent and are available for download in a browser. Premium subscriptions also let the sender know that the files have been downloaded by their recipients, noted Adobe spokesperson Courtney Brigham. “Other than the notification, there is no need to e-mail large attachments or deal with FTP servers and their access controls,” Brigham said.”
SSL technology protects SendNow information using both server authentication and data encryption. “This technology helps ensure your data and documents are protected and available only to you and users authorized by you,” Brigham explained. “In addition, you can use application-level features to limit the accessibility of your content.”
