Ever since the 1980s, TV viewers have been trying to get away with something sneaky: They want to watch shows without having to rearrange their social lives and careers in order to keep up with what’s going on. Why should you miss poker night on Thursday when you could tape/TiVo/BitTorrent that show for a more convenient time? The TV industry was horrified when VCRs first arrived but eventually came to tolerate them, and TiVo and other DVRs merely made the process of “taping” a show digital.
